Business Spotlight: Freshies Lobster Co

Thanks to Freshies Lobster Co., Utahns can now laugh in the faces of those who say it’s impossible to get good, fresh seafood in our landlocked state. That’s because in 2017, Freshies beat New England at its own game, winning the title of “World Best Lobster Roll” at Maine’s inaugural festival dedicated to this classic sandwich. And this win was no fluke—it took both five expert judges and 250 attendees to name Freshies number one.

Lorin and Ben Smaha first launched Freshies as a Park City farmers’ market stand back in 2009. Both originally New England natives, they quickly drew attention and customers for their culinary chops. Soon, they upgraded to a food truck that toured around the Salt Lake City and Park City areas. By 2016, they’d established a brick-and-mortar location in Prospector Square.

Freshies serves its award-winning roll in three sizes (2oz, 4oz, and 5oz). All come New England style: big chunks of lobster tossed in mayo and seasoning on a buttered hot dog bun. The star ingredient is always fresh, imported from Maine.

While the lobster roll may be Freshies leading menu item, it also offers other sandwiches, salads, and soups, all of which can be embellished with lobster for $4 per ounce. You can find out what a lobster Sriracha grilled cheese tastes like or gravitate toward something a little lighter like the Lobster Lettuce Cups or Lobster Bisque.

Soon, we  may be able to enjoy a taste of New England in Salt Lake, too. The Smahas are planning a second location in the capital soon.
